  • This week I chose "April Showers", by Al Jolson

This song has a nostalgic feeling with how the arrangement of the instruments. It reminds me of an older Disney movie, similar to Sleeping Beauty. The composers did an excellent job of capturing spring's image. The instruments do a great job of portraying a lively tune, making it easy to imagine yourself in a meadow prancing along to this song. Carefree and enjoying the simple beauty of the nature that surrounds you. The Sound of Music captures this scene at the beginning when she is so full of life, enjoying the simple pleasures rolling around the green grass hills. This song is truly a piece of art in the way it can bring such imagery with just the instruments. The lyrics of "April Showers" do an excellent job at reinforcing that spring hope. In one of the lines, it states, "And where you see clouds upon the hills, You soon will see crowds of daffodils." In this line, we welcome the gloomy days because they will give us beautiful flowers. Changing what was once a depressing feeling into a joyful surprise. Instead of being upset that there are stormy clouds on the horizon, we can look forward to the May flowers that will come because of the rain.

  •  The song that I chose this week was "Stagolee" by Mississippi John Hunt

This song has a very back waters feel to it. It makes me feel as if I'm down south in the Bayou. Something that I found fascinating in the song is how they portray the story. Starts with them robbing a coal mine that has some gambling going on. The two men had the robbery planned out in a way, so they won't shoot each other in the process. One of these men was Stagolee, the other was Billy De Lyon. Billy De Lyon knocked off Stagolee's Stetson hat in the process. Stagolee ends up killing him even after hearing him beg for his life. I find this portion of the song so interesting because they just robbed a saloon, and this man is going to kill someone over a five-dollar hat. With all the money that they just scored he could easily replace that hat. But instead, he takes someone’s life over something so meaningless. This is a great way to show how heartless Stagolee really is and how he doesn’t care for anyone or their backstory. If he feels wronged in anyway, he takes his revenge to the extreme. This song really portrays the characters in such a way that you can picture all of this taking place and the instruments in the background aid the song in a way that gives it a remorseful feeling to it.

Welcome!!

Morgan Lewis here. Welcoming you to my blog. A little about myself is I love to be outdoors and participate in sports. I am down to try just about anything. It is currently my freshman year in college, super stoked to be a Thunderbird!

One of my favorite artists is Rascal Flatts. Some other artists that I'm interested in would include but not limited to Journey, Eagles, Khalid, Why Don't We, Toby Keith, Survivor, Weezer, etc...
My favorite genre would have to be 80s rock, indie, or gospel. I know those are all very different but each genre has a gift to make or break a vibe. At least for me, my taste in music changes with the times, weather, and the type of mood I'm in. So I'm excited to explore new music as well as dive into some of my all time favorite songs.

Some all time favorite songs of mine are...

"Easy Lover" by Philip Bailey, Phil Collins
"What Hurts the Most" by Rascal Flatts
"Walk This Way" by RUN DMC
"Tremble" by Lauren Daigle
