  • This week I chose "April Showers", by Al Jolson

This song has a nostalgic feeling with how the arrangement of the instruments. It reminds me of an older Disney movie, similar to Sleeping Beauty. The composers did an excellent job of capturing spring's image. The instruments do a great job of portraying a lively tune, making it easy to imagine yourself in a meadow prancing along to this song. Carefree and enjoying the simple beauty of the nature that surrounds you. The Sound of Music captures this scene at the beginning when she is so full of life, enjoying the simple pleasures rolling around the green grass hills. This song is truly a piece of art in the way it can bring such imagery with just the instruments. The lyrics of "April Showers" do an excellent job at reinforcing that spring hope. In one of the lines, it states, "And where you see clouds upon the hills, You soon will see crowds of daffodils." In this line, we welcome the gloomy days because they will give us beautiful flowers. Changing what was once a depressing feeling into a joyful surprise. Instead of being upset that there are stormy clouds on the horizon, we can look forward to the May flowers that will come because of the rain.

  1. Hey Morgan! I had the exact same thought when I listened to the song too! It definitely gives off a very nostalgic peaceful happy vibe similar to what you get when watching a Disney movie.

  2. Yes! The song defintenly has this majestic feel like what would be used in a film or play. I think the quick flute sounding notes that come after the end of the singer's lines sound like butterflies are taking off or something. To me Al Johnson's voice also sounds similar to how singers would sing in musicals and such.

  3. Morgan, I hear the same kind of Disney style in this song too, and also reminds me of "Dancing in the Rain" a little bit. It's so optimistic, and really does just make you want to smile and start dancing and really enjoying the beauty around you!
